Letter XLVII · On Master and Slave
Seneca
In Seneca's time, most considered mastery over others as the ultimate form of power and freedom. Seneca flips this notion on its head. True freedom, he argues, comes from self-control, not dominance over others. This perspective challenges the Roman social order, where one's status and liberty were tied to the subjugation of slaves. Mastery of self, not of others, is the key to genuine autonomy.
