Tao Te Ching, Chapter 12
Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu warns against the seductive pull of sensory overload and material pursuits. In ancient China, where opulence and distractions were signs of status, this perspective challenged the prevailing values of courtly life. The sage, in this view, embodies an inner orientation—letting go of superficial allurements to cultivate a deeper, more intuitive understanding. This clarity is not the absence of sensation, but the freedom from its tyranny.
