Tao Te Ching, Chapter 20
Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu challenges the instinct to conform to societal norms by declaring it "ridiculous" to value what others value without question. In ancient China, just as today, social harmony often depended on aligning with collective values. Yet, Lao Tzu suggests that true wisdom and fulfillment come from questioning and sometimes rejecting these imposed values. This tension between societal expectation and personal authenticity is as pressing now as it was then.
