Tao Te Ching, Chapter 8
Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu's wisdom cuts against the grain of social expectations that prize appearances and achievements. Norms often press us to adopt masks or roles that promise respect through effort or status. Yet here, true respect comes not through striving, but by embracing authenticity and simplicity. In the Taoist view, self-contentment is the ultimate strength, a state where the external world naturally aligns in acknowledgment.
