Enchiridion, §1
Epictetus
Epictetus lays the foundation for Stoic freedom by partitioning the world into what we can control and what we cannot. This distinction was crucial in a time when many believed fate governed all aspects of life. For Epictetus, control begins with inner life—your opinions and desires—while everything beyond your actions, from reputation to property, remains indifferent. The aim is not indifference to life but mastery over one's responses to it.
