Enchiridion, §5
Epictetus
Epictetus gives a masterclass in Stoic thought, shifting the locus of disturbance from external events to internal perceptions. In his time, many believed fate and external gods controlled their destinies. Against this, he asserts our mental frameworks, not the events themselves, dictate our peace or turmoil. The Enchiridion challenges us to exercise sovereignty over our reactions, not the uncontrollable world around us.
