Book II, Chapter 3
Confucius
Confucius lived during a time of political turmoil, the decline of the Zhou dynasty, and the rise of competing states. Governing by law and punishment was common, but Confucius sought a deeper moral transformation. He believed in leading by virtuous example to cultivate genuine respect and moral awareness, rather than mere compliance. This notion contrasts sharply with the legalist approach that dominated later periods in Chinese history, where order was maintained through strict laws and harsh penalties.
