Chapter XV
Confucius
Confucius' principle of reciprocity is an early expression of what we now call the Golden Rule. It urges us to actively consider the impact of our actions on others. In a time when social harmony was threatened by natural chaos, like the floods described in Chapter XV, this principle served as a guide for restoring balance. Confucius suggests that moral cultivation, like taming nature, requires deliberate effort and consideration of others’ experiences.
