Section HISTORY
Voltaire
Voltaire's dismissal of history as primarily a catalog of crimes and misfortunes challenges the romantic view that history chiefly serves to glorify and inspire. This was a common perception in his time, where history often celebrated the grandiose and the noble. By reducing history to its bleakest elements, Voltaire pushes against the notion that it inherently enlightens or ennobles us, suggesting instead that it unveils the darker patterns of human behavior. The Enlightenment often sought to demystify and critique such grand narratives, exposing the failings of mankind that polite society preferred to gloss over.
