Epicurus
Epicurus's distinction between pleasures arises from his desire to free people from the tyranny of unnecessary desires. In his garden, where he taught, the emphasis was on simple living—valuing mental tranquility over the fleeting thrill of sensory indulgence. This philosophy stood against the prevailing Greek notion that happiness required wealth, power, or fame. For Epicurus, true contentment came from within, from mastering one's desires and attaining peace of mind.
