Volume II, Book III, Chapter I: How the Taste for Physical Gratifications is United in America to Love of Freedom and Attention to Public Affairs
Alexis de Tocqueville
Tocqueville saw democracy in America as a double-edged sword. While it nurtured a noble pursuit of equality, it also risked fostering resentment. This darker side of equality, the pull to level everyone down, echoes the tensions of the French Revolution, where the desire for égalité sometimes overshadowed the ideals of liberté. Tocqueville's warning remains pertinent: the quest for equality must not suffocate individual freedom.
