On the E at Delphi
Plutarch
Plutarch's emphasis on two Delphic maxims—"Know thyself" and "Nothing too much"—cuts to the heart of Greek moral philosophy. These phrases are the pillars upon which the entire edifice of ethical living stands. In a time when Greek society valued balance and self-awareness, these inscriptions were a counter to excess and ignorance. By identifying these as foundational, Plutarch suggests that true wisdom begins with self-knowledge and moderation, contrasting sharply with the indulgence and self-deception that still tempt humanity.
