Pythian II
Pindar
Pindar's exhortation to "become what you are" may seem enigmatic, but it speaks to the essential struggle within Greek culture between fate and personal excellence. For Hieron, the victor of the chariot race, it was a call to align his actions with his deeper nature and destiny, not merely to bask in his current triumphs. The Greeks believed that true greatness required not just victory, but the continuous cultivation of one's inherent virtues. This idea pushed against the notion of resting on laurels, insisting instead on an active engagement with one's potential.
