Marcus Aurelius

Is it your reputation that's bothering you? But look at how soon we're all forgotten. The abyss of endless time that swallows it all. The emptiness of all those applauding hands, the people who praise us—how capricious they are, how arbitrary. And the tiny corner of the earth in which it all happens. The whole earth itself a mere point in space.

Marcus Aurelius wrote this not as an exercise in nihilism, but as a reminder of perspective. From his vantage as Emperor, he saw firsthand how applause and reputation were fleeting, subject to forces as arbitrary as the whims of a crowd. The Stoics viewed fame as a distraction from virtue, a noisy but insignificant echo against the vastness of time.
