Letter XXXVII · On Allegiance to Virtue
Seneca
Freedom, in Seneca's view, is not the absence of constraints but the presence of courage. He writes to a young man, Lucilius, urging him to see that true liberty is achieved through bravery, which means living in accordance with virtue, regardless of external circumstances. Many equate freedom with power or wealth, but Seneca points to character as the true liberator.
