Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things only hoped for.

Of all the means which wisdom acquires to ensure happiness throughout the whole of life, by far the most important is friendship.

It is upon the former of these that the enjoyment of life chiefly depends. Happiness may therefore be said to consist in bodily ease, and mental tranquility.
